June 13 – Beside Quiet Waters
On a calm June evening, a pair of common loons patrolled the shoreline of Caribou Lake as the sun set in the west. I happened to be floating by in my kayak as this pair lined up perfectly in the sunset.
The pair had nested early and were away from their two eggs for a short time to fish. The scene was a typical one for the Northland, and one to be remembered and appreciated.
While the two were silent here, they didn’t hesitate to bellow out a warning call when an eagle or falcon cruised by overhead. Their calls, a haunting melody that reverberates across the lake, are a truly unique and captivating part of these magnificent birds.
On quiet evenings like this, the world slows down enough to remind us what really matters.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” — Psalm 23:1–3
Nearly halfway through the year, these times are fleeting. Enjoy your next sunset — it is a gift from God.
