December
“In the Northland, December writes in white.”
December in the Northland
December settles over the Northland in quiet stillness. Fresh snow blankets the landscape like a soft covering, insulating forest and field beneath its gentle weight. Familiar shapes are simplified into clean lines of white and shadow, and the world feels hushed. At the feeder, chickadees and blue jays flit and chatter, bright sparks of life against the winter calm.
For photographers, the rhythm shifts. Layers replace light jackets, gloves become essential, and each outing requires intention. Yet the reward is purity — untouched snow, crystalline frost, and the deep blue tones of early twilight. Winter strips the landscape to its essentials, revealing a different kind of beauty.
“He gives snow like wool; He scatters frost like ashes.” — Psalm 147:16
December reminds us that rest is not emptiness; it is preparation. Though winter in the North can be demanding, it offers renewal for those willing to embrace its pace. In the stillness, we are invited to reset, to reflect, and to begin again.
