April 8 – Ice Armor
A powerful spring ice and snow storm blew in off Lake Superior with high winds and freezing spray — proof that winter’s grip is not easily surrendered.
Along the shoreline, pine trees were encased in heavy armor of ice, transformed into towering white sculptures. What looked severe was, in fact, protection.
While many associate Lake Superior’s fiercest storms with November, April can be just as explosive. The lake’s surface temperature often lingers in the upper 30s to low 40s °F, and that lingering cold shapes the storms that sweep across its waters.
Within days, the ice melted away. The trees remained upright and healthy, their branches unbroken. The very force that formed around them shielded them during the height of the storm.
“He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down His hail like pebbles. Who can withstand His icy blast?” — Psalm 147:16–17
Nothing could have protected these trees except the conditions God established. When the storms of life rise around you, remember: what feels harsh may be His covering, and what seems severe may be His shield.
