April 24 – American River Otter
While walking across the Lower Gooseberry Falls bridge, this river otter suddenly emerged from a small opening in the ice with a freshly caught fish. Otters are typically shy, but this one paused just long enough for a photograph before slipping back into its frozen world.
The North American river otter is perfectly designed for life in the water — sleek and streamlined, with a powerful tail for propulsion and sensitive whiskers that detect prey even in murky currents. It can swim up to eight miles per hour and remain underwater for several minutes. Even in winter, it thrives beneath the ice, maintaining breathing holes and traveling between hidden air pockets.
There is something joyful about watching an otter at work. It moves with energy and confidence, fully equipped for the currents it inhabits.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.” — Isaiah 43:2
Like the otter, we are not sent into life’s waters unprepared. The same Creator who formed it for icy rivers sustains us in every season, equipping us for the waters we must travel.
