Duluth Canal

April 29 – Daybreak on the Canal

Day 119 of 365

The 1,000-foot Paul R. Tregurtha is a frequent visitor to the Twin Ports and arrives at the Duluth Canal on a beautiful April morning. Scenes like this remind us why photographers and visitors alike never seem to tire of Canal Park.

At this one special place, the elements converge. Light, wind, water, wildlife, and commerce often come together in remarkable harmony.

People sometimes ask why I keep returning to this same spot. I cannot really give them an answer other than this: it brings me joy. In many ways, it is like returning to the Bible again and again—it never grows old and always brings peace.

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” — Psalm 143:8

The rewards of simple routines—such as a morning walk, visiting old friends, or sitting quietly on a park bench—are not measured in financial gain or in tasks checked off a list. Instead, they are found in peace of mind, joy, and a heart full of gratitude.

What, then, is true wealth?
