Brule River

April 22 – Springtime on the Brule

Day 112 of 365

Spring along the Brule River often arrives dressed in snow. The old swinging bridge, long a landmark for fishermen and paddlers, stretches quietly across the dark, moving water.

Above the surface, the scene feels still and peaceful. Beneath it, life surges. Each spring, salmon and trout push upstream from Lake Superior into these cold, clear waters, returning to hatcheries and spawning beds upriver. Steelhead can survive spawning and return to the lake; most salmon die after spawning, completing a single, powerful life cycle.

After roaming Lake Superior for years, they battle current, cold, and distance to find the narrow ribbon of water they once knew as fry. Their Creator placed within them a remarkable instinct — a pull toward home.

In much the same way, there is a deeper longing within us. As the seasons of life pass, earthly things grow dim compared to the hope found in Christ. We feel drawn toward our true home.

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” — John 7:38

Follow that current. Seek Christ with all your heart, and you will find Him. He is the one drawing you.
