April 4 – Late Snow
Snowfall in April carries a quiet beauty. It adds needed moisture to the awakening soil, yet it rarely lingers long. Within a few days, warmth returns, and the white blanket melts back into the earth.
Here, a pair of white-tailed deer browse on fresh poplar branches, pausing to watch from the shelter of the woods. Whitetails are remarkably equipped for survival. During the coldest months, their metabolism slows to conserve energy, allowing them to endure long stretches when food is scarce.
These deer stand steadily in fresh snow while spring waits just beneath the surface. Wildlife does not rush the season. Wildlife accept what the day brings and trust the rhythm woven into creation. The seasons flow forward, never backward, each one preparing the way for what comes next.
“Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God for help and wander about for lack of food?” — Job 38:41
The same God who sustains the raven and the deer faithfully watches over us, even when winter seems slow to leave.
