Grand Marais Lighthouse

February 22 – Sun Pillar

Day 53 of 365

This stunning sun pillar formed behind the Grand Marais Lighthouse just after sunrise. Atmospheric conditions were perfectly aligned, allowing sunlight to refract into a breathtaking vertical beam.

Tiny, flat ice crystals drifted through the air, acting like millions of miniature mirrors. When the Sun sits low on the horizon, these crystals reflect its light straight back to our eyes, creating the glowing column we call a sun pillar — even though no physical “pillar” of light actually exists.

A cold, stiff breeze off Lake Superior reminded me that it was still February, but witnessing this rare scene made the discomfort worthwhile.

“I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and calamity, I am the Lord, who does all these things.”— Isaiah 45:7

Each day is a gift from God. Enjoy it, and take time to look around as you go about your day — even the smallest moments can remind us of His presence in creation.
