July 11 – Duluth Rose Garden – Where Roses Meet the Harbor
Along the shores of Lake Superior, Duluth’s Rose Garden unfolds in full July color. Set above the harbor in Leif Erikson Park, it offers a quiet place where roses bloom against a backdrop of open water and the Lift Bridge standing in the distance.
A walk through the garden in the cool of the morning brings a deep calm. Dew rests on each petal, and as the sun rises over the lake, a gentle fragrance begins to drift—carried on the same breeze that moves across the harbor below.
Roses are known for their sharp prickles—outgrowths along the stem. They protect the plant from deer and rabbits, while also acting like tiny hooks that help it steady itself and reach upward toward the light.
As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field. — Psalm 103:15
Something is fitting about roses overlooking the harbor—beauty paired with protection. The sharp places in life may feel like thorns, yet often they are what anchor us and guide our growth—lifting us, little by little, toward the true Light of the World.
