Pileated Woodpecker

June 3  — The Family Tree – Pileated Woodpecker

Day 154 of 365

A male pileated woodpecker leaves the nest to bring breakfast to its two chicks; the mother is already out gathering food for the growing family. Pileated woodpecker chicks grow very fast, and their appetite is enormous — which is why the parents are constantly flying back and forth as you see in this photo.

Hidden in a cavity high in a tree, young pileated woodpeckers wait while their parents work from sunrise to sunset. This pileated woodpecker has just left the nest, flying off to gather insects to feed two hungry chicks inside the tree.

Early June is a season of provision. All across the Northland, nests are full, and the woods are alive with parents gathering food from dawn until dark. It is a reminder that this season is not just about growth, but about care, provision, and the quiet work that sustains life.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” — Matthew.

The woodpeckers tell a story of provision and hard work, just the way God made it to be.
