Seasonal Milepost – First Departure

Every year there is a moment when winter loosens its grip not by temperature, not by calendar, but by movement. The first ship departing Duluth is one of those quiet but unmistakable mileposts of the season.

Today the Hon. James L. Oberstar pushed out through the harbor ice, becoming the first laker to depart Duluth for the new shipping season. The lake is still locked in ice, the shoreline still brown and quiet, and spring still feels far away—but this is how the season turns in the Northland. Not all at once, but one sign at a time.

The first ship out means the Soo Locks will open soon, ore will begin moving, and another Great Lakes shipping season is underway. Long before leaves appear on the trees or flowers return to the woods, the ships tell us spring is coming.

Seasonal mileposts aren’t always flowers and birds. Sometimes they are steel hulls, diesel engines, and a slow path cut through harbor ice.

And just like that, the long winter has taken one more step toward spring
