Waves

April 10 – Rollers

Day 100 of 365

Lake Superior storms can be mighty in mid-April, as shown by these powerful rollers at Canal Park. When high wave warnings are issued, surfers and photographers head to the shoreline, hoping to witness “the big one.” A cold spray across the face can be a bracing therapy on an otherwise routine day.

Few sights are more dramatic than the force of a spring storm churning the big lake. Though the winds had begun to ease when I took this photo, the lake still carried stored energy. Long after the gusts diminish, the rollers continue marching in, wave after wave, for hours.

Standing near such power is humbling. The crashing water makes us feel small and reminds us how little control we truly have. Yet it also points beyond itself.

“Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!” — Psalm 93:4

If the strength of the lake leaves us in awe, how much greater is the One who holds it in place — and whose love for us is even greater still.
